Malaysia is a country that is still heavily pushing for the war against drugs. They are trying to enforce harsher laws and regulations to because this war on illegal drugs is failing. Malaysia began this movement in 1975 when the government prescribed the death penalty for drug trafficking. Then in 1983, it was made that the death penalty for this was mandatory. Malaysia has stated attempts to be a drug-free country by year 2015. Illegal drugs continues to threat national security by covering the network of addiction, trafficking, smuggling and manufacturing. The government feels that something needs to happen now in order to keep the situation under control. New strategies such as aggressive anti-drugs campaigning with media, increased cooperation with non-govermental organizations and even creating awareness of enforcement. Malaysia even announced an "all out war" against drugs in 2003, declaring an entire year devoted to and heading this movement. The recorded a heaping number of 23,638 drug addicts and about half of these people were new addicts. Currently their is only 28 drug rehabilitation centers for housing which holds 10,000 addicts. One of the main reasons that illegal drugs has had such a negative impact on this country is because it is a major transit point. The Golden Triangle promotes the heavy trafficking because of the amount of cash flow and people from this sprawling area. The government continues to enforce these harsh new regulations in attempts to stop all illegal drugs within the country.
