ORGANIZATIONS
The topic of The War on Drugs establishes a debate between groups on both sides of the spectrum. With the drug war being avidly discussed about issues around the world, there are groups arguing for the legalization of drugs while the government and other organizations fight and argue against it. There are prominent figures on both sides of the issue, from athletes to musicians to government officials, many people listen to the opinion of those who are well known around the world. Although each group has good opinions and arguments for their side of the drug problem, it is up to you to decide which side of the War on Drugs you believe is right.
Founded in 1993 was ENCOD (European Coalition for Just and Effective Drug Policies) and is an organization out of Europe that believes drug prohibition and drug policies are not necessary and are immoral. This organization is calling for European citizens to come together and fight against this drug war. Encod grew rapidly and now consists of 150 companies, organizations, and members who want to try and end this wide spread issue of drugs. The goal of this organization is to establish a legal drug regulation to combat drug-related problems.

Started in 2002 is LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) which is an organization that extends across the globe. This group is made up of criminal justice professionals who have seen first hand the destruction and failure the drug war has caused. LEAP believes the War on Drugs should end and be replaced by a tightly run legalized regulation of drugs. They believe any respect for law enforcement, mainly police, has been lost in the drug war and their presence needs to be felt again. A main focus of theirs is to get the public, media, and policy makers educated on the current drug policy and how it has turned out to be a total failure. This organization understands how poorly the money is being spent on the War on Drugs and the failed effect it has made in helping communities, decreased crime, decreased drug availability and reduce violence caused by drugs.

Common Sense for Drug Policy is an organization that has its main focus on changing the drug laws. This organization takes on all drugs involved in the War on Drugs and not just the marijuana side of the problem. One of the main goals of this group is to decrease the exchange of drug related diseases and to focus on providing health measures and syringe exchanges.

While there aren’t really any groups or organizations against legalizing drugs, you can see opponents of decriminalizing drugs within the government and citizen population. In most cases you are going to see politicians, law enforcement agencies, judges, presidents, and those who benefit from illegal drug trafficking, in support of keeping all drugs illegal. With drugs being the lucrative business it is, you can see many people involved in the drug trade are happy that a country such as the U.S. has not legalized drugs nationwide. Mexican drug organizations alone employ over half a million people throughout their country. Not only does the War on Drugs help drug organizations become larger, stronger, and smarter, it also increases the amount of jobs in the United States with the vast increase in incarceration and the need for bigger prison systems.
