Portugal –
Portugal started implementing the system of decriminalizing all drugs on July 1st 2001. This would make them the first European country to abolish the criminal penalties for individual possession of all drugs. Instead the government works on sending addicts and for counseling and other help. Five years after decimalization every aspect of the drug policy shows successful. Even after 12 years, the statistics are showing that drug use was cut in half. The new policy includes clean stations along with these beneficial programs, which show the push for rehabilitation. Clean stations have significantly dropped the number of death from over dosing and spreading of diseases. These stations take away the use of dirty needles and provide a safer and less stressful environment.
Penalties and consequences are still in place for people caught dealing and are still put in jail based on the level of their crime. If you are caught with passion larger than aloud you are sent to a “Dissuasion Commission.” This is a set of three people who ultimately decide your consequences with the possibility of no sanction at all. Portugal reached their primary goal of reducing health consequences due too drug use. Decriminalization and legalization are two very different concepts, but with the actual success seen in Portugal leaves great possibilities for the United States.
